Is 320×240 resolution enough, or should I pay more for higher resolution?

For most field inspections it's the professional sweet spot. 76,800 real pixels — each a genuine temperature reading, unlike budget cameras that interpolate fake pixels. Combined with 40 mK sensitivity and a 12 μm detector, it catches temperature differences as small as 0.04°C. Need more? The TK6/TK7/TK8 are there. But for daily electrical, HVAC, and building work, 320×240 gets it done.

What can I actually inspect with it?
  • Electrical — panels, breakers, connections. Auto hot/cold spot tracker flags issues instantly.
  • HVAC — duct leaks, coil performance, compressor checks. Covers -20°C to 450°C.
  • Building — missing insulation, moisture intrusion, thermal bridging. Picture-in-Picture mode documents exactly where each issue is.
  • Mechanical — motors, pumps, bearings, steam traps. Catch abnormal heat before it becomes downtime.
Do I need thermography training?

No. The TK5 is focus-free — sharp from 0.4 m to infinity, no focus ring needed. For pros, it still has adjustable emissivity, color alarms, and T-DEF fusion for report-ready images when you need them.

How accurate is it?

±2°C or ±2%, the professional standard. All images save as radiometric JPEGs — every pixel stores temperature data. Open them later in the free AnalyzIR® software and re-measure anything without going back to site.

Will it survive being dropped or used in dusty, wet conditions?

The TK5 is IP54-rated against dust ingress and water splashes, and has been tested to withstand 2-meter drops onto concrete. In real-world terms:

  • Work in a dusty factory or an attic full of insulation? Dust won't get inside.
  • Light rain on a roof inspection? Splashes are fine.
  • Drop it off a ladder? It's designed to survive.

At 0.72 kg (1.59 lbs), it's light enough to carry all day and balanced well enough to operate one-handed while holding a ladder with the other.

How long does the battery last?

4+ hours per charge. The battery is field-replaceable — pop it open, swap in a spare, keep working. USB-C fast charging gets you a full recharge in 2.5 hours. One spare battery covers a full workday.

How is this different from the cheaper thermal cameras I see online?

The thermal camera market has two very different tiers, and the gap matters:

  • Cheap consumer-grade cameras (under $300) typically use small detectors with low native resolution, limited temperature range, and no meaningful accuracy spec. They're fine for finding a draft around a window, but not for professional diagnostics or reportable measurements.
  • The TK5 is a professional instrument: genuine 320×240 resolution (not interpolated), ±2°C accuracy you can put in a report, radiometric image files for post-analysis, IP54 durability, and a removable battery that can be swapped in the field. It also includes AnalyzIR® PC software at no extra cost — a tool that many competitors charge a subscription for.

If you're being paid to find problems and your reputation depends on getting it right, the TK5 pays for itself in the first few jobs you don't have to redo.

This is the king of thermal cameras, it has so many features for different applications. Before we could remodel and add another room onto the house, we needed to see where the electrical wires were so we'd know where to add or bypass an area. Well, this detected all the electrical hotspots easily. The readings were 100% accurate every time. I expected this to be a bit heavy but it isn’t, it is lightweight and also heavy duty and durable. Good thing it came with an instruction and information booklet because this has a lot of features, the booklet is very informative. Battery last quite a long time before needing charged. The thermal images are really cool to look at and easy to understand. Value for money this is totally awesome and worth it.

My unit arrived ready to go with a charged battery. The rubberized body feels tough and balanced, much like my higher-end FLIR unit, and the overall shape sits comfortably in my hand. Included was an adapter kit for charging the device using any power source from around the world.

It boots quickly and shows clean thermal images with low noise. The native 320x240 resolution gives enough detail for electrical panels, HVAC troubleshooting, insulation gaps, water leaks, and similar jobs. Temperature readings match what I get from my FLIR on the same targets, so accuracy holds up. The wide range covers -4°F to 842°F, and the field of view suits most field tasks. Fusion mode that overlays thermal on visible helps place heat patterns quickly, and the 5MP visual camera records clear reference shots. The removable battery plus USB-C charging keeps things practical when work runs long.

The fixed-focus lens works fine for typical distances, and the tripod thread adds stability when needed.

This thermal imaging camera delivers impressive clarity and usability, making it a strong choice for electrical work, home diagnostics, and building inspections. The 320×240 IR resolution provides sharp thermal detail, and the built‑in 5MP visual camera helps capture clear comparison images. The 3.5" touchscreen is responsive and easy to navigate, even when switching between modes on the job. Its wide ‑4°F to 842°F temperature range and 49°×37° field of view make it versatile for everything from spotting heat loss to identifying electrical hotspots. The handheld design feels sturdy without being heavy. Overall, it’s a reliable, accurate, and user‑friendly tool that performs well in professional and DIY settings.

First things first: this fella is ready for work. I have used a few home-user import thermal cameras but this TK5 is clearly targeted for industrial use. Out of the box you can feel the quality. It is heavy in the hand and the rubber overmolding feels like it is ready for rough use. The removable battery is a nice touch, you get a charging base but also can charge via USB-C if that's preferred. It comes with a Sandisk 32GB microSD card and the basics in the box so you can start taking images right away.

On the camera side it does what I wanted. The 320x240 thermal image has enough real detail to be useful and the fusion modes look great for finding a hot spot then documenting what you were looking at. The temperature range has been plenty for electrical checks and general building diagnostics. The 3.5 inch touchscreen is fine but the UI is inconsistent. It is not always obvious what is touch enabled and what is not and the touch sensitivity and accuracy isn't up to what you might be used to on a cell phone.

This Fotric TK5 Thermal imaging device features rugged construction with durable materials. The imager offers good resolution and detail for various types of work. Great for detecting leaks and getting a thermal picture of whats actually going on. The device is easy to setup and use out of the box. Appears to be a premium device as reflected by the price tag.
